Hello out there! Below is a trailer for a short documentary I directed, called Way the Wind Blows. This film focuses on one family’s journey recovering from Colorado’s historic urban wildfire, the Marshall Fire. Thank you to the Szucs family for letting us into their lives and sharing their story.
The Marshall Fire happened on December 30th 2021 with hurricane force winds and an abnormally warm and dry winter, a fire spread quickly taking the lives of two people, over a thousand pets and consumed over 1,000 homes & structures.
Filming Heather and her family taught me about resiliency and the importance of maintaining hope in difficult circumstances. It was also a reminder how much us adults can learn from children. This event happened to my town and many of my friends lost their pets and homes. Making this film felt like something I needed to do.
It’s important to share stories, document life and spread awareness. I hope this film helps accomplish that. There are a ton of people I’d like to thank starting with the first responders who ran towards the fire to save lives. I went through a lot of body cam footage and there are no words that can express enough how brave and determined first responders were during the evacuation. The Louisville Police Department and the Louisville Fire Department, along with other fire fighters all over like West Metro, came to help! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
One thing I hope people can take away from this story is how sometimes it takes time to recover. There are all sorts of traumatic experiences we all have and I want to give people hope. An important safety fact I learned and want to pass on is, you have two to three minutes to escape a burning house.
I’m thankful to announce that Way the Wind Blows will be shown at select film festivals, including Breck Film Fest and Colorado Short Circuit Film Festival. More info to come.
